SUMMARY:Kit Fan & Jeremy Tiang in Conversation at JF Books in Washington DC
DESCRIPTION:Food\, Connection\, and Identity: Cooking Across Hong Kong\, London\, China\, and Taiwan\nWriters Kit Fan and Jeremy Tiang explore family connection\, heritage\, identity\, and cooking across Hong Kong and London\, China and Taiwan. In Kit Fan’s novel Goodbye Chinatown\, Michelin-starred chef Amber grapples with home and family across London\, Shanghai\, and Hong Kong in a vibrant tale of migration\, politics\, and food that also offers a cautionary message for Taiwan. Jeremy Tiang’s upcoming translation of Ping Lu’s To the East of the East explores cross-strait relations in a layered literary thriller by one of Taiwan’s most influential contemporary authors. \nAbout the Speaker\nKit Fan is an award-winning UK-based novelist\, poet\, and critic from Hong Kong. He is the author of two novels\, Diamond Hill and Goodbye Chinatown. His poetry collections have been shortlisted for the T. S. Eliot and Forward Prizes\, and his honors include the Northern Writers Awards and the Times/Stephen Spender Poetry Translation Prize. \nAbout the Moderator\nJeremy Tiang won the Singapore Literature Prize for his novel State of Emergency and was shortlisted for the same prize for his short story collection It Never Rains on National Day. He has translated over thirty books from Chinese.

Decades later\, a Malaysian journalist returns to her homeland to uncover the truth of a massacre committed during the Emergency\, while Siew Li’s son uncovers the truth of his family’s past. Informed by years of painstaking research\, Jeremy Tiang’s debut novel dives into the tumultuous days of leftist movements and political detentions in Singapore and Malaysia. It follows an extended family from the 1940s to the present day as they navigate the choppy political currents of the region. State of Emergency questions whether we can grasp the truth after the fact. \nJeremy Tiang won the Singapore Literature Prize for his novel State of Emergency\, and was shortlisted for the same prize for his short story collection It Never Rains on National Day. He has translated over thirty books from Chinese\, including Zhang Yueran’s Cocoon for World Editions\, which won the Singapore Literature Prize. Originally from Singapore\, he now lives in New York City. \nSunisa Manning was born and raised in Bangkok by Thai and American parents. Her work has appeared in Prairie Schooner\, The Rumpus\, Mekong Review and other places. She’s been honored with residencies at Hedgebrook and Hambidge Center for the Arts. A 2017 Steinbeck Fellow at San Jose State and a 2018 Emerging Writer Fellow at the SF Writers Grotto\, Sunisa lives in Philadelphia with her family. Her first novel\, A Good True Thai\, was a finalist for the Epigram Books Fiction Prize for Southeast Asian writers. \nRegistration is required to attend. Register before the event here. Please arrive 15 minutes early to register for the event and browse books. Buying a book before or after the event is a great way to support the Making Worlds project!

SUMMARY:Crossing Genres: Jaap Robben at Vancouver Writers Fest
DESCRIPTION:Crossing Genres\nAmber Dawn\, Claudia Dey\, Jaap Robben\, Jordan Tannahill\n  \nSome writers’ talents traverse form. Four of these unusual polymaths engage in a discussion about their work. Amber Dawn (Sodom Road Exit) is an award-winning writer and the co-artistic director of the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. Claudia Dey(Heartbreaker) wins accolades for her play- and novel-writing alike. Jaap Robben (You Have Me to Love) is a multidisciplinary author and artist revered in Europe. Jordan Tannahill is described by the Toronto Star as “one of Canada’s most accomplished young playwrights\, filmmakers and all-round multidisciplinary artists.” Do their stories always manifest in a particular medium\, or does deciding how to use an idea come later? How does the evolution of their work in one area impact the others? Do they ever feel hindered by their cross-industry approach? Creativity runneth over during this intelligent conversation. \nShaena Lambert is a novelist and short story writer whose stories have appeared in prominent publications including Toronto Life and The Walrus\, and have been anthologized in Best Canadian Stories and The Journey Prize Anthology. \nThis program is supported by the Dutch Literature Foundation and as a part of the Dutch Culture USA program by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York.

SUMMARY:The Interviews with Marsha Lederman & Jaap Robben at Vancouver Writers Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Interviews with Marsha Lederman\nEsi Edugyan\, Rachel Giese\, Jaap Robben\nIt’s amazing the answers you’ll get if you ask the right questions. Marsha Lederman\, Western Arts Correspondent for The Globe and Mail\, knows this all too well\, searching out emotional truths\, intellectual discoveries or simply a new favourite anecdote. Now\, she separately interviews three of the most talked-about writers on our roster. Esi Edugyan won the Scotiabank Giller Prize for Half-Blood Blues. Her latest\, Washington Black\, longlisted for the Man Booker Prize\, “teems with the mystery of life” as it follows a fleeing eleven-year-old slave. Rachel Giese’s award-winning writing has featured in Canada’s top publications. Her presentation on the damaging impact of toxic masculinity in Boys is revelatory. Jaap Robben is a multitalented Dutch poet\, novelist and playwright whose novel\, You Have Me to Love\, is a favourite amongst European booksellers. \nThis program is supported by the Dutch Literature Foundation and as a part of the Dutch Culture USA program by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York.

SUMMARY:The Netherland Club of New York BOOK | FILM: Craving
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 18th\, 2018 The Netherland Club has a special combined TNCBOOK and TNCFILM event; the book presentation of Esther Gerritsen’s roman Craving (NL: Dorst\, 2012)\, followed by the screening of the book’s filming\, directed by Saskia Diesing (2018).\n \nESTHER GERRITSEN\nEsther Gerritsen is one of the most established\, widely read\, and highly praised authors in the Netherlands. She was awarded the Frans Kellendonk Prize for her oeuvre in 2014. In 2016\, Gerritsen had the honor of writing the Dutch Book Week gift\, which had a print-run of 700\,000 copies. Her bestseller Craving was praised by Herman Koch as “a gem among recent Dutch literature”. Craving is now finally available to the American reader in English translation. Esther will end her extensive US publicity tour with an event at TNC where she will read a short excerpt of Craving\, and answer questions about her work. \nFollowing the book presentation and the signing session\, we will screen the film in the presence of Esther Gerritsen. Screening starts apr. 7:45 PM. \n\n\n\nCRAVING  |  DORST\nCraving is a Dutch comedy film\, directed by Saskia Diesing. In July this year\, the film was one of nine films shortlisted to be the Dutch entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.Lovely\, young Coco (Elise van ‘t Laar) has no idea what to do with her life. Plagued by numerous questions about her childhood\, she is desperate for any kind of love. Based on the novel by one of Netherlands’ finest authors\, Esther Gerritsen\, who collaborated with director Saskia Diesing on the script\, it is clear from the start that Coco’s relationship with her mother is strained\, and her powerful older lover is rather dispassionate. When Coco learns her aloof\, albeit charming mother Elisabeth (Simone Kleinsma) is terminally ill\, she decides to move in and dedicate herself to caring for her even though her mother isn’t interested in having her there. The timeless question of what it means to be ‘family’ anchors Craving\, and the three strong lead roles are perfectly cast in this very intimate\, personal and lustful black comedy that runs the gamut from hilarious to\, at times\, outright uncomfortable. \nTICKETS:\nTNC Members: FREE*   |    Non-members: $15

SUMMARY:Sisonke Msimang @ Finding Home\, Vancouver Writers Festival
DESCRIPTION:Finding Home\nwith/ Elaine Castillo\, Amitava Kumar\, Sisonke Msimang\n\n\nWednesday\, October 17\n8:30pm\n\nRevue Stage\n1601 Johnston St\,\n\n\n\nTo be home is to belong. Home is a place\, but it is also a feeling: one increasingly absent for tens of millions across the globe\, whether refugees or settled immigrants. These three internationally lauded writers probe this concept in their most recent works. Elaine Castillo’s America Is Not the Heart follows three generations of Filipino women struggling in the United States “and reads like a seismograph of the aftershocks of trading one life for another.” New York Times writer and author Amitava Kumar passionately depicts the life of a young Indian student living in New York as he tries to fit in. And Sisonke Msimang’schildhood of travelling in exile through Africa and North America beautifully articulates our deepest need for home. \nKathryn Gretsinger is the lead instructor in UBC’s Integrated Journalism program for which she has been recognized with the Killam Teaching Prize.

Its power comes from the fierce energy of the narrative structure\, the way of handling silence and pain\, and the ability to confront the darkest areas of experience with clear-eyed sympathy and care. Jaap Robben handles delicate\, dangerous material with subtlety and sympathy\, but also with a visionary sense of truth that is masterly and unforgettable.”–Colm Tóibín \nThis program is supported by the Dutch Literature Foundation and as a part of the Dutch Culture USA program by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York.
