SUMMARY:Carolina Pihelgas at Litquake!
DESCRIPTION:Part of Words Around the World\nSponsored by Center for the Art of Translation\n\nPoet\, author\, translator\, and editor Carolina Pihelgas is a leading literary figure in her home country of Estonia. Now\, with The Cut Line\, translated by Darcy Hurford\, Pihelgas’s “extraordinary” (Estonian Literary Magazine) prose writing is available to English readers for the first time. In fewer than 100 pages\, Pihelgas takes readers to a near-future Estonian countryside\, plagued by the effects of climate change and poised for an impending conflict. These hints of future violence recall the protagonist’s own troubled history\, even as she attempts to find serenity and order in the rhythms of nature and simple work. Joining Pihelgas in conversation is Sasha Vasilyuk\, award-winning author of the novel Your Presence Is Mandatory. Doors at 6:30pm. \nSasha Vasilyuk is a journalist and author of a debut novel\, Your Presence Is Mandatory (Bloomsbury)\, winner of the California Book Award and the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature. It has been translated into seven languages. Her nonfiction has been published in the New York Times\, CNN\, Harper’s Bazaar\, Time\, USA Today\, Los Angeles Times\, Telegraph\, KQED\, and elsewhere. Sasha grew up between Ukraine and Russia before immigrating to the U.S. at the age of 13.

SUMMARY:Carolina Pihelgas and Petra Hůlová at Vancouver Writers Festival: Women’s Voices from Europe
DESCRIPTION:Here is a rare opportunity to hear from three influential\, contemporary European writers\, all on one Vancouver stage. Award-winning Estonian writer and poet Carolina Pihelgas shares her first work to be translated into English; The Cut Line follows a woman who flees to the countryside to put an end to her toxic 14-year relationship\, and comes face to face with the dread of climate change. The Long Version\, by renowned Czech author Petra Hůlová\, explores the shifting meanings of feminism over generations as a woman and her daughter clash over an incident from the past. Camille de Peretti joins us from France with Portrait of an Unknown Woman\, a dazzling reimagining of the life of Gustav Klimt’s model in one of his most iconic paintings. The writers will discuss their stunning novels\, other work in translation emerging from Europe\, and female empowerment today. Moderated by Anna Ling Kaye.

SUMMARY:Petra Hůlová at the Toronto International Festival of Authors
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed Czech author Petra Hůlová and Korean novelist Lee Heejoo bring two unsettling perspectives to desire\, devotion and power. In Hůlová’s The Long Version\, a feminist writer in her fifties revisits a complicated relationship from her youth as her daughter challenges her understanding of consent\, feminism and the shifting meanings of the past. In Lee’s Holy Boy\, translated by Joheun Lee\, four devoted K-pop fans take their obsession to a terrifying extreme\, kidnapping their idol and watching their fantasy of perfect love unravel into paranoia and violence. Across radically different worlds\, Hůlová and Lee examine how desire can distort perception\, how devotion can become possession\, and how the pursuit of agency can produce unexpected\, troubling consequences.
