Carol Shields: The Stone Diaries selected for Big Jubilee Read

World Editions are delighted to announce that Carol Shields’ bestselling novel The Stone Diaries has been selected for the Big Jubilee Read 2022.

Widely regarded as a modern classic, The Stone Diaries is the story of one woman’s life; that of Daisy Goodwill Flett, a seemingly ordinary woman born in Canada in 1905. Described by Margaret Atwood as her glory book’ The Stone Diaries follows Daisy’s life through marriage, widowhood, motherhood, and old age, as she charts her own path alongside that of an unsettled century.

The Big Jubilee Read is a nationwide celebration of reading.  The Stone Diaries is one of 70 titles selected from a “readers’ choice” longlist by an expert panel of librarians, booksellers and literature specialists who have chosen with ten books for each decade of Her Majesty The Queen’s reign.  The list includes authors from a wide range of Commonwealth countries over the last seventy years including, from Canada, Carol Shields.

The final list of titles was announced on Sunday 17 April.  The Big Jubilee Read promotion, run by the Reading Agency and the BBC, will run through the spring and summer months up to the Jubilee in June.

World Editions Publisher Judith Uyterlinde says, ‘We are very proud to be publishing four of the finest novels by Pulitzer Prize winning Carol Shields. Her characters feel as close to us as if they were our best friends or dearest family.
